CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Sidlyn
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Bisexual
Rank: Candidate
Craft Speciality: None
Residence: Benden Weyr
Appearance:
A tall youth, Sidlyn stands at five foot eleven inches tall even at his current age. His skinny frame only helps to accent his height, though it does make him look like a beanpole. His skin is a light brown colour, inherited from his mother, as is his mop of tight curls, his hair being the same deep brown as his eyes. His face is quite angular in shape, wide at the top but slimming down into a firm jaw and pointed chin. His nose is just about the right size, not overly long nor too short, though it juts out a way from his face and is quite wide at the bottom.
He tends towards casual clothes, though since being a candidate and having to do all manner of dirty jobs, he's switched to second hand clothes from the Weyr's stores, and uses his casual clothes for times when he's not working (which isn't a lot of the time).

Personality:
Sidlyn’s an easy-going guy, patient and calm. He rarely raises his voice, as he dislikes confrontations. It’s bad enough if other people are fighting, and he’s got absolutely no desire to begin an argument or fight himself. If somebody’s trying to start one with him, he’ll try and speak to them and calm them down, and if that fails he’ll walk away. And probably go shake in his cot for a bit. Tension doesn’t go well with him.
Thankfully, Sidlyn’s optimistic and quietly happy demeanour means that people don’t often want to fight with him. Being laid-back, he’s more likely to agree with someone and just go along with someone else’s plan. Sure, he’s got brains and could probably come up with some good ideas of his own, but other people might not like them, so he’d rather keep them to himself. You have to really press him to get him to come forth with his opinion.
He’s no leader of people, given this personality. He doesn’t want to be one, though. He’s content to be what he's to be, whether it's Impressing a dragon, or going on to do something else if he gets too old to Stand. He's been through candidacy so many times now that he's beginning to wonder if he's not cut out to be a rider.
Sidlyn loves felines, and he’s quite sad that he can’t keep one of his own. A Weyr isn’t the best place for an animal that needs to be out doing its own thing. On the converse, the lad dislikes canines and runners, being allergic to the latter.
Sidlyn’s also very modest. He hates being given compliments, and will usually protest them with some negative view of himself. He’s confident enough, just hates the idea of being egotistic – hence he’d rather dismiss a compliment than let himself believe it. This is probably because one of his pet peeves is arrogance, and he doesn’t want to become what he dislikes. He’d rather get along with people and feel that they like him than think he’s an arrogant person.
History:
Turns ago, a young, somewhat simple drudge named Kiyin allowed a male rider who had just lost a flight to take advantage of her. Several months later someone recognised the changes in the girl, not least her swelling stomach, and told her she was pregnant. Kiyin was stunned, to say the least. She was advised to take a short trip between, but broke down in tears at the thought of killing the baby inside her. Instead she went through with the pregnancy, and, just as winter was beginning, gave birth to a boy who she called Sidlyn.
Sidlyn was immediately fostered within the Weyr. He lived the typical life of a weyrbrat – not that he could ever have been called a ‘brat’ since he was the quietest of his foster mother’s charges. At first she feared that he would be simple, like his mother, but at harper lessons he proved himself as capable as anyone else.
When Sidlyn was twelve, his foster mother explained to him that nobody knew who his father was, only that he was a rider in the Weyr. The man never came forward to claim Sidlyn as his own. Kiyin was happy for Sidlyn to know she was his mother, s the boy at least knew one of his parents. He never had much desire to find out who his father was, feeling strangely angry that the man had used his mother and didn’t want to know her or him.
As he was almost thirteen, his foster mother also talked to him about Standing. She said he was entitled to, being Weyrbred, and as his father was a dragonrider he could stand a good change at Impressing. After much deliberation and wondering if he’d turn out to be like his father, should he Impress, Sidlyn decided to try his luck. After all, his foster mother told him that she thought he’d never turn out to be that way. He's now been Standing for three Turns without luck. He hasn't spoken up about any disappointment, but the recurring lack of Impression is starting to get him feeling dubious about continuing to be a candidate.
