CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Ceryd
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Rank: Junior Weyrwoman
Craft Speciality: Herbal preparations
Residence: Benden Weyr
Appearance:
Ceryd is a tall woman, though long in the torso more than in the legs. She's a fair build though, evidence of several Turns of riding; though she'll never match men strength for strength, she's as muscular as a woman can get due to daily hard graft. She carries it well though, and dresses to suit her frame – nothing overly feminine, but with fitted clothes that emphasise the few curves she has. For day-to-day wear she opts for practical clothes that can stand up to going around doing this and that, tending to Etinath, and general wear and tear. However, she does make an effort for important appearances, meetings, and events such as Gathers, having a few dresses to choose from for these occasions.
The colour of her clothes is at least chosen well, complimenting what some would call an unfortunate, almost sallow skin colour, with medium green eyes that bear bags below them. Her cheekbones are prominent, and her jaw square for a woman. Her long face is framed by brown-blonde hair, which Ceryd has grown since the end of the Pass, though she tends to tie the shoulder-length mass back to keep it clean when doing certain work.
Personality:
If there's one thing to be said about Ceryd, it's that she's quiet. Some deride this trait in a gold rider, but others say the dragons choose who they will. Others still defend the girl, saying her quiet nature means she actually thinks about things rather than simply saying the first thing on her mind. And she does, something that so far as worked to her advantage. Ceryd is the last person you'd find to be getting into any sort of argument, not just because she abhors confrontation and ill feelings, but because she's so hard to rile up. Poke and prod at her all you want but she'll keep a level head, trying to talk the problem through. If pushed far enough she'll simply walk away – this may give her problems if she cannot walk away from a problem, however.
Ceryd's upbringing forged a caring nature in her, and is one reason she originally became a Healer. Being the oldest of a large family meant she cared for her younger siblings a lot, and has unbelievable patience with children. Some would be put off from having children by having to look after their siblings, but not so in Ceryd; rather, she is looking forward to having a family now that the Pass has ended. Finding the right man, however, will be the fun part. Ceryd has not had time for relationships and prefers to treat men as friends rather than possible romantic interests. She's getting more confident, partly thanks to reaching adulthood, and partly thanks to Etinath making her have to communicate with a wider variety of people, but she's a way to go yet.
A cautious optimist, Ceryd is looking forward to the Thread-free days. She is puzzled over the disappearance of the other Weyrs, but doesn't ask questions after seeing Illumira's attitude. She is looking forward to Etinath's first Flight in some respects, though she is worried that she won't be able to control her dragon properly, and might let the Weyr down. But then, that's Ceryd's greatest fear – letting people down. The studious girl hates the feeling of failure, either failing herself or the people who expect things of her (whether they really do, or she just imagines that they do).
History:
Born in the Healer Hall to a Journeyman Healer and his wife, Ceryd was their first child. Though her father had little time for her, working as he was on becoming a Master, he loved her a great deal. There was no disappointment that he did not have a son – his family was going to be large, and a happy one, no matter what happened!
And large it became; barely a Turn after Ceryd was born, the first of her ten siblings was born. By the time she was fourteen Turns old, she had four sisters and six brothers of various ages. Childhood was an interesting time for the girl, as she spent the majority of her time with her mother. Cooking, cleaning, mending clothes, sewing, weaving, looking after her siblings; it was a busy life, but what other life did she know? She went through every day with a smile, never wishing for anything else. It was just the way that life was.
When she turned twelve, her father became a Master. Though he was now a teacher at the Hall, he had more time for his children. Though they had had no lack of love and attention when he had the time, he was determined to do more for them now – starting with Ceryd. The girl showed interest in his craft, and so the man taught her what he thought she could handle. Ceryd loved every moment, absorbing information like a sponge and wanting to know more. Her father hadn't the time to teach her properly, of course, but they were in the perfect position, her being the daughter of a Master at the Hall.
Being a female apprentice was an interesting thing indeed. Many of the boys turned their noses up at the fourteen-Turn-old who thought she knew so much about the craft already. For a time she had practical jokes played on her, which quietened her considerably. She'd stay low and focus on studying, rather than trying to stand out from the crowd. Her progress reflected her hard graft, and Ceryd was always near the top of the class. She was proud for herself, and pleased that she was making her father proud, but bragging would not go down well with her fellows. She was somewhat distant from most of them anyway, though she had a few friends among the other apprentices, mostly other girls.
At eighteen, Ceryd walked the tables to become a journeyman. Initially excited at the idea of being placed at a Hold, Hall, or even Weyr, she was disappointed when the Masters told her that she would be staying at the Hall to study more. They were concerned about her lack of interaction with many of the other students, they said, and wanted her to work on that by working towards becoming a Master within the Hall, at least for the time being. Ceryd got over her initial sadness eventually, though she felt that she had let her father down by not being “good enough” to be placed somewhere. Once more she devoted herself to her studies, but also tried to cultivate better friendships among other journeymen and some apprentices close to her age, too.
Whatever was going to happen in her life, she wasn't, however, going to be a Healer forever. Search dragons came from Benden Weyr and Ceryd was among those people selected as suitable candidates for the clutch. There were a lot of girls, due to there being a gold egg as well as the usual promise of greens, and she didn't stand out among the crowd except for being a friendly face who would listen to anyone's troubles if they needed it. Ceryd did enjoy candidacy – it was not so much a change in pace, both candidacy and being a Healer busy occupations, but it was different, refreshing. And life-changing, too, for when the eggs hatched gold Etinath looked straight into Ceryd's eyes and claimed the girl as hers. Any disappointment her father had in her accepting the Search disappeared as he hugged his daughter tightly at the feast afterwards, her mother holding her hand and trying to hide her happy tears.
Weyrlinghood was, again, comparable to crafting. Of course, it was harder for Ceryd to keep her head down and work hard when Etinath seemed determined to grow dramatically overnight, as well as chat to every dragon she met. Two Turns on, they'd made it through without incident, something that pleased Ceryd. She didn't excel, but all that mattered was that the two of them were now full riders – and the junior gold pair, too. That did mean a whole lot of work, though! But Ceryd loved it. She'd spent the last eight Turns learning, first how to care for humans, then how to care for a needy dragon. Learning something new would be a breeze! And it was, though extremely tiring. But Ceryd's enjoying it, for all that the new Senior Weyrwoman seems not to be so pleased about recent events. Etinath will be rising soon, Ceryd's unusual moodiness is evident of that...what will come of the young gold's first clutch? How will things pan out from now?

Miori shifted closer to T'niel when he stood beside her. It wasn't in her nature to show weakness - a Weyrwoman had to appear strong at all times - but her heart fluttered at the thought of what they would all witness tonight. The look she gave back to T'niel showed her feelings clearly - she could trust to show them to her weyrmate. She was nervous, but there was a hint of excitement in her eyes that was reflected in the tension in Ilayth's muscles. The gold moved closer to Vroleith now that everyone was arriving, jointly making room for them and allowing her to twine tails with her mate.
Miori let her gaze wander over those gathered on the rim tonight. Her eyes rested a little longer than necessary on E'ront, giving the weyrlingmaster a look almost like that she had given T'niel. She was getting more in control of her feelings as the time approached, as opposed to feeling more anxious. Darylawn, too, got a look, and a small bob of Miori's head acknowledged him personally. She hoped her great nephew would continue to support the Weyr as well as he had, should Thread be returning.
Sorla came up to her then, and Miori gave the headwoman a smile. The woman had gone above and beyond the call of duty to help Solaria more than she was required to, and the Weyrwoman was grateful for that. "Most definitely," she replied, keeping her voice low. "Somewhat ominous, I'm sure you'll agree."
She cleared her throat and looked over at all those gathered then. "Thank you for joining us here for this momentous occasion. Tonight will be a turning point for Pern, whatever the outcome. And in a few short minutes, we will see what our future holds." It wasn't the best speech she could have made, but what else was there to say? None of them had had to go through this before. She turned then, to face the star stones, the finger rock looming before them, knowing everyone else would do the same. It was strange to think that every Weyr on Pern would be doing this same thing, too, waiting for the moment to come. Her hand sought T'niel's as anticipation flooded through her veins.
DRAGON INFO
Name: Etinath
Color: Gold
Age: 2
Appearance:
Etinath is a very dark gold all over her body, almost brassy in hue. Ceryd sometimes jokingly calls her a bronze, which annoys the dragon no end – but it's all in jest! Larger than average, her build is slim, though by no means slight. Her chest is overly large with the muscles that work her wings, those being proportioned perfectly. Her tail is long and whip thin, in contrast to her somewhat stocky legs that are planted firmly when she stands or walks. She's a challenge to oil, and has a few problematic spots that require more attention than others when Ceryd performs this duty. The backs of her knees often itch, as does the base of her neck.
Etinath is instantly recognised by her distinctive walk, a swaying one with heavy footsteps. Not the most feminine of golds! She seems sluggish on the ground, but in the air and in water she can be surprisingly graceful - though not as fast as smaller dragons, something that occasionally frustrates her.
Personality:
Etinath compliments Ceryd in many respects, which is of benefit to the pair. The gold cracked shell knowing exactly who she was and what she wanted, and she doesn't hesitate to let it be known what she wants. At first, she had no idea of privacy and secrets, leading to some embarrassment on Ceryd's behalf, but she's learnt over time what thoughts of her rider's are private. Still, she'll share any of Ceryd's thoughts she thinks need to be told to someone else to make things better for her rider. The one thing Etinath hates to see, like any dragon, is her rider upset or in any way affected by negative emotions.
Etinath is still relatively young, and her out-going, bold nature might cool yet. She loves to talk, and any dragon who meets her will find themselves instantly being chatted to as though they're an old, dear friend. Etinath's all about social networking, believing it's vital not just to her rider, but also to the Weyr as a whole that she is on good terms with as many dragons as possible.
One weakness of Etinath's is that she is a hopeless optimist, unlike Ceryd, who has the more level-headed view of things. Thankfully, she always listens to her weyrmate, and many a time Ceryd has had to show Etinath another perspective on a matter. At least the gold is open to ideas and opinions, instead of being bull-headed – even if she does have a tendency to want to rush head-first into things.
