Character Name: Aldril
Age: 17
Gender: male
Sexuality: heterosexual
Rank: Candidate
Craft Specialty: none
Current Residence: Benden Weyr
Appearance: Aldril is a fairly handsome young man. He is medium height, standing at 5'11. He is very thin, and for years he has been called a "bean pole." As he moves into adulthood, however, his build is become more lithe and limber than simply skinny. His movements are graceful, rather than clumsy and gawky. He has refined, slender features, with refined cheekbones and a delicate nose; some would call him a "pretty boy." His complexion is naturally medium, but he tans easily enough, and he usually has a faint golden tan. His hair is a light shade of blonde-brown which looks more blonde if he has been out in the sun for a long time--which, in Igen's warm climate, is frequent. His striking aquamarine eyes are one of his best features, and one of the things that he most often receives compliments on.
Aldril tends to wear practical, comfortable clothing. He does not object to dressing up for a special occasional such as a gather, but for the most part, he prefers to dress for function rather than style.
Personality: Aldril is just generally a nice person. He is a very sweet guy and most people find him charming. He is friendly to everyone and tries not to let his first impressions stop him from getting to know a person. He is polite and courteous towards others, and you will rarely hear him say a bad word about anyone out loud. He likes to say that his mother raised him right. He is especially polite towards young women, and he follows an old fashioned kind of chivalry, opening doors and pulling out chairs for ladies, and he doesn't understand at all when they find this offending.
He is a very composed person and he rarely loses his temper. He is a rock in a crisis, somehow managing to stay calm even when chaos is breaking loose all around him. Some people find his unflappable nature infuriating in itself, and try to provoke him into losing his temper. It rarely works, and he'll usually walk away before he gets angry.
That isn't to say that Aldril doesn't ever feel angry or upset, he has just trained himself not to show it. Taking care of his younger siblings has given him a great sense of responsibility, and that has led him to believe that making a scene about your feelings is not going to get you anywhere.
In addition to being very composed, Aldril is also quite laid back. He tries not to worry too much about the future, and he prefers to let things take their natural course rather than trying to control the situation. At his heart he is an optimist, and believes that things will work out for the better.
An odd fact about Aldril is that he is claustrophobic. He is terrified of small spaces. His worst fear is being trapped in a closet. He also gets nervous if he is crushed in a large crowd of people. If he ends up in a small or cramped space, he usually starts hyperventilating, and he must escape immediately or risk having a panic attack. Not exactly an advantage in any case, but not something he should have to worry about as a potential rider--not with the open sky ahead of him!
History: Aldril was born and raised in Nerat Hold, the son of a runnerbeast trainer, Adriol, and his wife, Riliana. His first few years of childhood were very normal and happy. His parents were loving and took good care of him, and he had plenty of friends around the Hold to play with. The only problem was his claustrophobia, which began at a young age. He would panic if he was in a tight space, and his friends and family had to come rescue him from such situations many times.
His mother had four more children in rather quick succession after Aldril was born. Aldril was closest with his younger sister, Ardalia. He was also very close with his cousin Liastan, who was a turn older than he was. The three of them became fast friends and got into all sorts of trouble around the Hold.
When Aldril was ten turns old, his father was killed in an accident while training an unbroken runnerbeast. Aldril was shocked and sorrowed by the loss of his father. As the oldest son and now the oldest male in the immediate family, he also had the added pressure which that status brought. He was expected to help care for his younger siblings. As he grew into his teens, he also helped make decisions for the family. He became the public face of the family, although Riliana was really making most of the decisions.
On the outside, Aldril acted as charming as ever, but on the inside, he was not happy. He didn't enjoy the politicking of being the head of the family, he did not want to become a Beast trainer like his father, and he wasn't even sure if Hold life was for him.
Everything changed when Liastan was Searched. Aldril was ecstatic for his cousin, and just a bit jealous. He was invited to the Hatching at Igen Weyr. He fell in love with the Weyr during the few days he stayed there. Liastan became L'stan when he Impressed to a Blue dragon. When Aldril saw the look in his friend's eyes at the moment of Impression, he knew exactly what he wanted.
When Aldril returned to the Hold, he couldn't stop thinking about dragons. He felt foolish and childish for his interest, but he couldn't resist. He confided in Ardalia about his new dream, and she encouraged him to try for Search, but he didn't think that it would be possible with his responsibilities at the Hold.
Then, L'stan's dragon was killed in an accident. Aldril was devastated when he heard the news. Liastan had run away from the Weyr shortly after his dragon's death, and has not been heard from since. Aldril went through his daily work in a daze, unable to get over his cousin's...not death. It was almost worse knowing that he was dragonless and lost somewhere.
Finally, with a Queen Flight on the horizon, Aldril decided to try for Search. He was declared suitable for candidacy, and went to the Weyr. He thought his younger brother (and, for that matter, his sister) was capable of taking care of Hold matters, and he wanted more than anything to honor his cousin's memory by Impressing himself.
