CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Setheatolten (Se’tolten)
Age: 15 Turns
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Rank: Candidate
Craft Specialty: None
Residence: Benden Weyr
Appearance: Setheatolten’s hair is an auburn color, close to reddish brown. It is quite long, falling about halfway down his face. His bangs have long since moved to the sides of his face and are the same length as the rest of his hair, no longer a problem for him. Setheatolten’s eyes are gray in color, though some might argue it is an odd color of blue.
Setheatolten is maybe on the smaller side of a person his age, though it isn’t that hard to guess how old he is. Despite being rather skinny, Setheatolten is not the most agile person in the world, or even close. He isn’t to fast either, and he isn’t sure why, but Setheatolten has never liked running much anyway, he doesn’t have much stamina for logn distance and doesn’t have the speed for a dash. He is actually quite strong, even though at first look he wouldn’t seem so.
He can often been seen wearing clothes that either look very alike or are the same ones for a few days in a row. Setheatolten never bothers attempting to explain this to people, always preferring to keep to himself. He has never shown much interest in wearing nice clothes, or really caring at all about what condition he seems to be in. Hygiene has never been high on his priority list.
For whatever strange reason it may be, Setheatolten is aglossal (def.: without a tongue, having no tongue), and was born so. He has never spoken a word in his life, nor has he ever tasted the food he eats. Eating is not a luxury for Setheatolten, but a contest for survival. If he eats food wrong, he could end up choking and possibly dying. When he was younger, that was more of a problem, but now, Setheatolten has very few qualms about eating. He hasn’t choked on anything in 2 Turns. Still, eating is ridiculous for him, and he doesn’t eat unless he’s actually hungry. Sometimes he uses his hands to eat, but usually he tilts his head to move the food to the other side of his mouth and chew with his other teeth. This gives him a lot less attention.
Personality: Setheatolten is very private. He tends to stay away from other people and doesn’t like large groups. He always feels out of place around others; if they know about his affliction, sometimes that look at him funny, and if they don’t know, sometimes they ask him questions and expect replies. He finds it easier to ignore people all together most of the time. He can write very well in the hopes he could write down his thoughts to show other people, but Setheatolten finds it to much of a bother to carry things around with him, so usually he just gets by without talking to people. Setheatolten doesn’t easily get angered because over the years he has learned how little use it is to get angry. He hates being asked questions by other people, and when they start asking him things, Setheatolten is glad to have an excuse to not have to answer.
Setheatolten is very good at simply blending into the crowd and going unnoticed. He can seemingly disappear by acting natural and casual. It is easy for him to go around and get ignored because Setheatolten has taught himself how to not draw attention. He hates showing emotion because it seems to attract attention. Setheatolten often walks with his head bent to avoid looking at others and a swift pace whenever he wants to avoid being by other people. He tends to hate big gatherings, especially feasts because there are both people and food there, and he doesn’t like either of those that much.
A lot of the time, Setheatolten will sit around and just do nothing. He is a very patient person that doesn’t mind watching people go by. His favorite thing to do in a crowd is to sit in some secluded corner and watch everybody, and being ignored himself. Setheatolten can learn a few things doing this other people wouldn’t. The only problem he tends to have with doing this is somebody will see and try to talk to him. Usually he just sits there and tries to ignore them; he won’t move because he doesn’t like it and it seems rude to him.
Setheatolten isn’t actually sure how badly he wants to Impress to a dragon. The main reason he decided to be a Candidate was to get away from his home; he didn’t actually care if he ever Impressed, but now that he is at the Weyr, Setheatolten thinks a dragon could be useful. No matter how long it might take, it could give Setheatolten a chance to tell others the words he wants to say. The problem was he would have to say it to his dragon, who would have to tell another dragon, who would have to tell their rider, and the rider would have to tell someone else if the person he wanted to talk to wasn’t a dragonrider. When Setheatolten thinks about it like that, it might be easier to simply not talk to people. He already doesn’t like talking, but the ability to tell them exactly what he thinks like other people can do would be great for him.
History: Setheatolten has no idea who his real parents are. They either hated him or died, because his adoptive mother, Tena, found him while she was taking a walk. She took him and took care of him. She was the only one in the family that liked him at all. His adoptive father, Sadis, liked his own two sons, Seten and Ditan, much better than him. For the first ten Turns of his life, Setheatolten lived okay because Tena was always there to take care of him. Setheatolten loved her a great deal as his own mother, even when she admitted to him that she wasn’t his real mother. It was Tena that taught the spoken language he could not utter, Sadis saying it was a waste of time because he could not speak. Tena also taught him to write very well, although Setheatolten rarely wrote his thoughts down anyway. He was always taunted when he did so.
The first times he always got mad and flew into fits of rage, but as he got older, Setheatolten also grew wiser and knew it was useless. When he seemed to stop caring, they didn’t make fun of him as much. Seten and Ditan never knew how much it really hurt him because he seemed to stop caring. They never did leave him fully alone either. Setheatolten grew to depend on Tena and how much she cared about him as much as her true sons. He hated Sadis, who hated him just as much, if not more, in return.
Then his life took a turn for the worse when Tena died. For a while, the entire house was filled with mourning. Setheatolten was a lot sadder than the others. When they healed, his life was far worse. Tena wasn’t there to protect him, and he spent a lot of time outside in the wilderness just to be alone. He hated being outside, but it was better than returning home, which he always did when night fell. After he was 12 Turns, Seten left and the house became all that much bearable, which wasn’t much. The real problem was always Sadis, who seemed to like taking everything out on Setheatolten. Sadis was the reason Setheatolten never really learned a craft like the others did. Sadis wasn’t about to teach him, and Setheatolten spent to much time alone to get someone else to teach him or to learn himself. That fact made him very unproductive, not that Setheatolten cared much anymore.
Ditan left when Setheatolten was fourteen Turns old, leaving him alone with Sadis, whom he always avoided. Setheatolten was ready to do anything to get out of the house then. When dragonriders came on Search the next Turn, he avoided them at first, but then he thought it would be great to go to the Weyr, so Setheatolten stayed around and managed to get chosen as a Candidate despite the fact he was aglossal and could not talk. Setheatolten was simply glad to be away from the place he hated. When he got to the Weyr, Setheatolten wasn’t’ sure if he actually wanted to go to a hatching. After a while, he saw how helpful it could be, and so Setheatolten is actually looking forward to the hatching.
