CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Metvien
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Bisexual
Rank: Scribe
Craft Speciality: None
Residence: Fort Hold
Appearance:
Though he doesn’t have much height to him (for a man his age), standing at five foot nine inches tall, Metvien has a certain air of superiority about him. It’s something in the way he holds himself; in the cut of his clothes; the way he looks at other people as though they offend him. That said, there’s nothing extraordinary about his appearance; nothing that immediately sets him apart from other people. His hair is a reddish-orange colour, and he keeps it cut short so that it’s easy to keep neat and tidy. His eyes are a medium blue colour, often directing an unsettling gaze at one person or another. His body is slim but not muscular, the result of his particular eating habits – he doesn’t gorge himself like some people, nor does he need to eat a lot to make up for any strenuous work. He dresses conservatively, usually in darker colours and in layers, something that’s a necessity in the Fort winter. Even in the summer he still wears long-sleeved tops and full trousers. His clothes show he cares for his appearance: they are never anything but pristine.

Personality:
Uptight is the best way to describe Metvien. He has a superiority complex of sorts, though he won’t admit to it. It’s just that other people aren’t as smart or as good at everything as him. He’s got a sharp mind and he knows it, though he lacks a sense of humour and doesn’t actually have many friends due to his wicked tongue and the way he treats people. The lack of friends doesn’t seem to bother him; they’d probably get on his nerves anyway with their stupidity after all, he thinks. He hasn’t yet met anyone on his intellectual level with whom he can share a bond, and he doubts he will.
He’s a snippy man who always looks on the negative side of things – he’s a ‘glass half empty’ person. Nothing’s ever good enough, either. Those new clothes he bought? The hem’s a bit uneven. The records the newest scribe’s just written out? That word’s not clear enough; start again. There’s no pleasing him. His parents have been blissfully unaware of how awkward he is so they’ve never called him on it, so Metvien’s just carried on being abrupt and rude about pointing out other people’s mistakes, however trivial they may be.
He comes across as rather cold, giving off an air of superiority that tends to drive people away. He doesn’t let people get close to him, not just because of his belief that he’s better than everyone but because, deep down, he’s afraid of being hurt. If he likes a girl, he’s too afraid to tell her about it in case she turns him down. That, in his eyes is failure, and failure is the one thing Metvien hates most of all. He’ll avoid it all costs, which usually means he’s not open to doing anything new that he isn’t used to. With his arrogance though, it’s not often he meets something he thinks he can’t do – and, unfortunately, he usually can do it. Unless it’s a particularly physical thing, in which case he makes his excuses (usually about it being “below him”).
When it comes to love, Metvien’s quite the stranger. Thanks to his unwillingness to open up to anyone, he’s never had a relationship. Deep down he wants one, but the part of him that’s afraid of failure stops him from trying. He’s disturbed to find that, from about the age of eighteen, he found himself somehow attracted to men as well as women. He tries his best to quash these strange thoughts, thinking them unnatural for a man, but they’re there despite his best efforts, and another cause for unsettlement and defensiveness in him.
History:
Atvien and Myria, a stonemason and Holder at Fort Hold, were delighted at the birth of their first child. In the age-old tradition, they combined their names to produce Metvien’s, happy in the knowledge that they had a family now. Unfortunately, their first child was to be their last – it had taken then two Turns to conceive him as it was, and despite their best efforts, three Turns after the birth of Metvien there was still no sign of another child on the way. A trip to the Healers left Myria distraught; she had been lucky even to have Metvien they said, and another baby, should she be able to conceive again, could damage her internally even more than Metvien already had.
In light of this, the parents doted on Metvien. What the boy wanted, the boy got – and boy, did he want a lot. Atvien had to work hard and they had to scrimp and save to afford new clothes, the best toys, the nicest days out, all for their darling son. Not that he was much of a darling in the eyes of anyone but his parents. Metvien was rude and thoughtless, always causing other children to cry because of the way he spoke to them.
Metvien enjoyed his comfortable life in the Hold. He never had to work hard – he could boss other children around and get them to do the chores he was given, after all. All that changed when he turned twelve and had to find a job around the Hold, now no longer a Holdbrat. Crafting sounded like too much hard work, and he didn’t have the body or drive to do more strenuous tasks around the place. In the end he joined the scribes who maintained the Hold’s records. His reading and writing had always been top class, and it was a job that involved sitting around all day. It couldn’t be any more perfect for him.
And so that’s what he’s done for seven Turns. His parents are pleased that he’s enjoying his work (and, secretly, somewhat pleased now that he’s earning his own wage and they have more marks for themselves). However, in truth Metvien is starting to wish he’d apprenticed and had something that would stretch his mind – it is a good mind, after all. He’s too proud to admit that, of course, but the thought niggles away at the back of his mind, making him feel something he hasn’t felt before: doubt.
Pets:
Perfection Interrupted Gold
This queen is a pale gold color, even when in good health. She has only yellow undertones, and is particularly light-colored on her face and wings. She tends to have darker swirls of gold on her legs and along her neck, but even that is only truly noticeable in very bright sunlight. Her wing will remain damaged for quite some time, but she will eventually be able to fly again, though the injury will never completely cease to bother her. She is by no means a small queen, and would have been one of the largest queens in the South had she stayed there. She is two months old at the time of Impression and has not yet risen, so she should be relatively receptive to Impression. She is easily frightened and will be very attached to Metvien for this reason.
